Learning a language is like DIY

Learning a language is just like DIY. You have to be able to accept your mistakes. It won’t be perfect at first but when you take that leap of faith, you’ll be just fine. It might go wrong, yes, it might – but at the same time you have an objective – to put that piece of furniture up or to insulate that wall – or, in this case, to make that phone call to that supplier in English. A friend of mine recently had to re-do all his insulation because he’d bought the wrong kind – but he won’t make the same mistake again. Once you’ve got that wrong train on the underground in London because you didn’t understand what the guy was saying to you, you’ll naturally make sure you don’t do it again next time. But if you never try…
